The Semendre Benevolent Society is a non-profit organization whose mission is to preserve the heritage and
history of the Semendre people from Asia Minor. The organization was founded in 1913 in Tacoma, Washington, after
seven years of Semendre immigrants arriving in the United States.
In the past, the society has donated large sums towards the rehabilitation of our kinfolk who were forced to abandon
their homes in Asia Minor. Today, we are active supporters of the Greek Orthodox Church of America.
The majority of our members are centered in the city of Detroit, Michigan. Though several families live in
West Virginia, Kentucky, and California.
If you or a friend is connected to the Semendre people, please contact us.
We are also looking for historical material, including photos or information from past events such as the
annual ball. If you are a member of the Society, please let us know if you would be interested in the following:
- Semendre Historical Society, including sponsoring its start-up with a modest donation.
- The Semendre Story, a book written by Semendrens of the journey, relationship, lives, and family tree.
- Semendre Reunion, including options for a long weekend or a week.
